Sibling dogs at animal shelter find a home

The Chilton County Humane Society hosted a magical moment on Wednesday as the sibling pair of Josie and Jaks were adopted.
Both dogs were featured in an article in the March 31 edition of The Clanton Advertiser telling the story of how Josie had a brain tremor that was not life-threatening but left her having to rely on her bother Jaks to help get her through each day.
With Jaks by her side, Josie is a regular dog in every manner, but if separated, she does not eat or drink and encounters mental anxiety.
Due to Josie’s condition, the Humane Society was requesting that both dogs be adopted together. Adopting two dogs was never a concern for the Manuels.
“I figured that it would make them harder to find a home,” Donna Manuel said. “We’ve had deaf dogs before, and I knew that they needed to adopt us as much as we needed them.”
After reading the story and learning of Josie’s condition, Dan and Donna Manuel, who live in Shelby County, decided to adopt both dogs less than a week later.
“They just need lots of love and attention, and they will certainly get that,” Donna Manuel said.
The Humane Society had to complete the final steps required for adoption that included having both Josie and Jaks spayed and neutered prior to release.
Monday was the final night that the two would spend in their cage at the Humane Society.
“I’ve always had dogs and never been without one,” Donna Manuel said.
“Can you tell I’m excited?”
The Manuels are hoping that Josie and Jaks help to fill a void that has existed in their lives for the past month.
“We lost our last remaining dog a month ago and had to put her to rest,” Donna Manuel said. “I kept thinking that I would hear her in the middle of the night. It broke my heart.”
Josie and Jaks are expected to keep their names. The Manuels have a grandson named Jaks and had a previous dog named Josie.
“When we saw that the names were Jaks and Josie, we just knew it was fate,” Donna Manuel said.
