House fire: Clanton firefighters battle a blaze at a house off Third Avenue South on Monday.

A fire Monday morning claimed a residence off Third Avenue South in Clanton.

Clanton firefighters were dispatched to the scene at about 8:30 a.m. Monday, and the house, which is located in a residential area, was “fully involved” when they arrived.

Clanton Fire Chief David Driver said the blaze is under investigation though there was nothing immediately suspicious about the incident.

About 10 firefighters worked at the scene well into the morning, as windy conditions hampered their efforts, Driver said.

All parts of the house that were not destroyed had extensive smoke and water damage, Driver said, though there were possibly a couple of rooms that could contain salvageable items.

The house was likely more than 50 years old, Driver said, and could be more than 70 years old.

Jackie Harper, one of the neighbors watching on as firefighters tried to put out the fire, said he wasn’t aware of the fire until electricity to the area was cut off.

“We didn’t even know it was on fire until they cut the power,” Harper said.

Harper said a couple lived in the residence for several years.

“She took really good care of [the house],” Harper said “She doesn’t even know what happened.”

The residents were not injured in the incident but will still surely suffer because of the fire.

“We offered to let them stay with us tonight,” Harper said. “I don’t know what they’re going to do.”

One of the residents of the home was visiting a neighbor, and the other resident was outside when the fire was noticed.

“No one was actually in the house when it caught on fire,” Driver said.
