A look back at the top game from Week 2 of the varsity football season.

First quarter

Visiting Chilton County High School showed on the first two possessions of the game that it would control this year’s edition of the annual rivalry tilt, but the Tigers needed a first-down run by senior Corbin Bice on third-and-10 to keep the chains moving on their first drive.

A pass from junior quarterback Kendall Davis to senior Cade Hatch moved CCHS into scoring position, and a 10-yard run by Bice on another third down play gave the Tigers an early 6-0 lead, which was increased to 7-0 with Colby Barren’s point-after.

Then, the CCHS defense held Jemison to a three-and-out, as the Tigers would allow their hosts just four first downs on their first six possessions.

After an opening drive that took almost half the time off the clock in the first quarter, CCHS showed it could also strike quickly on its second drive, as junior Kidevon McDaniel scored from 35 yards out to make the score 13-0.

Jemison senior quarterback Phillip Lenoir connected with junior Austin Moore to convert a third down and move the Panthers into CCHS territory to end the quarter.

Second quarter

The promising Jemison drive was quickly stanched as senior Jaquaries Martin recovered a fumble on Jemison’s 44-yard line.

The Tigers were unable to capitalize on the turnover, as the offense went three-and-out and punted the ball away to JHS, which picked up one first down on an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty before punting back to the visitors.

Another strong run by Bice set up a 36-yard pass from C.J. Driver to Hatch for a touchdown with 6:11 remaining in the second quarter. Driver was sacked while trying for a two-point conversion to leave the score at 19-0.

A three-and-out and punt by the Jemison offense set up Chilton for another scoring drive.

On third-and-12, Davis scrambled to the left sideline and picked up the first down. Moments later, Davis showed his elusiveness again, as he escaped the Jemison defense and flipped the ball to an open Hatch, who ran the rest of the 54 yards for a touchdown.

Barren added the extra point to bring the score to 26-0, which is where it would remain at halftime as Jemison’s last possession of the half stalled.

Third quarter

Another fumble killed a Jemison drive to start the second half of play. This time, it was Keshawn Williams falling on the loose ball.

The Tigers seized the opportunity and made the score 33-0 on a 10-yard pass from Davis to senior Lance McGhar on a fourth-and-4 play with 7:18 on the clock. Barren was good on the point-after attempt.

With the game slipping away, the hosts put together their most productive drive of the game, with junior Eric Evans turning in a long run for a first down on third-and-7. But the Panthers turned the ball over on downs as a halfback pass on fourth-and-13 from the Chilton 24-yard line fell incomplete in the end zone.

Fourth quarter

The Panthers got the ball back when Jaren Swindle recovered a fumble, and on the first play, Evans found a hole in the Tigers defense and ran 58 yards for Jemison’s first score. The extra point was missed, leaving the score at 33-6 with 10:15 on the clock.

CCHS answered with a long run of its own, as McDaniel strode past the Jemison defense for a gain of about 80 yards and a touchdown. Barren’s extra point made the score 40-6.

Jemison picked up a couple of first downs before giving the ball back to Chilton County, which saw Dylan Leon run about 60 yards down to the JHS 4-yard line, but the Tigers wound up turning the ball over on downs.

The Panthers took over the last possession on their own 2-yard line with 1:50 remaining in the game, not enough time to mount a drive.
