While students build with Legos at the Lego Education WeDo Robotics Summer Camp, they will also build engineering and problem-solving skills, and maybe even a love of learning.

The Lego Camp will be held at Jefferson State Community College in Clanton from 12:30-4:30 p.m. on June 15-18, and anyone ages 8-12 may attend.

Students will explore different engineering topics while learning computer, math and science skills.

Jeff State Director Kay Potter said the material each day is cumulative, and the students will have designed and programmed their own creations by the end of the camp.

According to Potter, students will assemble battery packs and hook their machines to the computers so the Lego creations will not only be unique in their image, but will also move and have sound.

“Each day, or session has a theme, but the students are given a lot of freedom to be creative,” Potter said.

The four sessions are titled, “Amazing Mechanisms,” “Wild Animals,” “Play Soccer” and “Adventure Stories,” and will be taught by a certified elementary teacher from Birmingham.

Jeff State has offered the hands-on camp twice before, and Potter said the results have been “incredible.”

“The learning builds from one day to the next and it’s neat to see the way these kids learn while playing,” Potter said. “The most important thing is for them to have fun.”

The cost of attendance is $159 for the full four sessions and snacks will be provided.
