The Chilton County Health Care Authority selected Brasfield & Gorrie as the general contractor for the project to construct a new hospital in the county.

The decision was made at a regularly scheduled quarterly meeting Tuesday, according to Sibley Reynolds with the Authority.

Birmingham-based Brasfield was selected from among six companies, all of which had representatives meet with the Authority’s construction committee. The meetings lasted about an hour and a half each and were conducted last week, Reynolds said.

The committee recommended Brasfield’s contract be approved, and the Authority voted in favor.

One member of the Authority was absent from the meeting, and another abstained from the vote because of a potential conflict of interest, Reynolds said.

The other companies considered were B.L. Harbert International, Doster, M.J. Harris, Hoar, and Robins & Morton.

Bids weren’t sought, but instead, the candidates proposed negotiated contracts, which included information such as how much compensation the company sought per month.

Details about the approved contract weren’t immediately available.

Reynolds said the proposed contracts were based on a 14-month project and a building costing about $22.5 million.

Other costs will be involved with the project, such as site preparation, architectural work and equipment.

Officials are hoping to have an official groundbreaking at the site, off Highway 145 near Interstate 65 Exit 212, at the beginning of March.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, Ken Patterson was re-elected as chairman of the Chilton County Health Care Authority, and Mildred Ellison was re-elected as vice-chairwoman.
