The Jemison Panthers picked up road victories Tuesday night as they knocked off cross-county foe Isabella with the Panther girls winning 31-25 and the boys 53-32.

Laura Vinzant got the scoring started in the girls’ game with a three-point basket that was followed up with a basket by Taylor Ray to give the Panthers (4-1) a 5-0 lead.

Caryn Washington got the Mustangs on the board with a basket, but another two points by Vinzant brought a low-scoring first period to a close with Jemison leading 7-2.

Ray and Washington exchanged baskets to start the second period while a Hailey Underwood three-pointer drew the Mustangs (4-2) to within two points of the lead, 9-7.

An Andrea Powell free throw made it a one-point game, but a five-point effort by Vinzant sent the Panthers to the locker room with a 15-8 lead.

Washington and Synia Chatman started the third period with a three-point run for the Mustangs to bring the score to 16-11.

A free throw by Maria Flores and a basket by Washington was one more than a basket by Jessica Paschal, but the Panthers maintained a 19-15 lead heading to the final period of play.

Down three with 1:49 to play, Chattman tied the game at 25-all with a three-pointer, but with just 40 seconds left on the clock, Taylor Ray gave Jemison a two-point advantage.

Karmen Mims made it a four-point Panther advantage with 17seconds to play as Jemison held on to squeeze out the win.

Vinzant led the Panthers with 14 points, 10 rebounds, one steal and four blocks.

Chattman led the Mustangs with nine points and three rebounds.

The Panther boys (3-3) had an easier route to their win over the Mustangs as they jumped out to a first-period lead and never looked back en route to a 53-32 win.

Five consecutive points by Tremont Bryant started a 13-0 run for the Panthers to start the game.

Chase Pate added the first Mustangs points with two free throws at the 2:07 mark of the first half.

With the Panthers shooting just shy of 50 percent from the field in the first period to the Mustangs’ 14 percent, Jemison ended the first period with a 14-4 lead.

The shooting disparity continued into the second period as the Panthers outshot the Mustangs 54 percent to 18 percent .

With an 18-7 Panthers lead midway through the second period, back-to-back three-point baskets by Bryant extended the Jemison lead to 24-7.

An 8-2 Jemison run to bring the second period to a close gave the Panthers a 35-9 lead to the half.

Pate scored the first points of the third period with two free throws at the 6:17 mark of the third period and added an old-fashioned three-point play.

Despite Pate single-handedly out scoring the Panthers 9-8 during the third period, the Mustangs took a 25-point deficit to the fourth period.

Jeffrey Underwood started a three-point shooting contest early in the fourth period, with Wesley Martin and Jacob Carroll adding three-pointers as well to bring the score to 48-26 in favor of Jemison.

The Mustangs (0-3) went on to outscore the Panthers for the second straight period, 14-10, but it wouldn’t be enough as Jemison cruised to the win.

Bryant led the Panthers with 11 points (3-of-6 from three-point range), one rebound and four steals.

Pate led the Mustangs with 11 points, 10 rebounds and a steal.
