A breast cancer awareness fundraiser will be held Saturday at The Outdoor Market LLC, days before the business’ grand opening.
The Halloween-themed fundraiser will feature a pumpkin carving contest, a barbecue rib cooking contest and a raffle and auction.
All of the proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society for breast cancer research, according to Eugene Wyatt, who co-owns The Outdoor Market with his wife, Judy Wyatt.
The business is located at 808 Logan Road in Clanton.
It will open on Oct. 29 and regularly have vendors selling fruits and vegetables, home goods, antiques, arts and crafts and flea market items.
Eugene Wyatt said the owners wanted to hold the fundraiser before opening the business.
“It’s just something I felt like we needed to do for the community,” he said and added that his wife’s mother and three of his aunts were afflicted with breast cancer.
Entries for the pumpkin carving/coloring contest will be divided into divisions based on age: 4 through 6, 7 through 9, 10 through 12, 13 through 16 and 17 and older.
Pumpkins will be furnished, but participants are welcome to bring their owne pumpkins if desired. Contestants will need to bring their own carving knives and decorations.
Paint will be provided for children ages 4 through 9.
Carving and decorating must be done on-site and will begin at 9 a.m. Pumpkins must be ready for judging at 11 a.m.
Parents or guardians will be allowed to verbally assist children ages 4 through 9 but cannot physically do the coloring or decorating.
The entry fee for ages 4 through 12 is $1, ages 13 through 16 is $2 and 17 and older is $3.
Prizes will be awarded to the first-, second- and third-place winners in each age group.
Also, the winning pumpkins will be auctioned off at the fundraiser event, with proceeds going to breast cancer research.
Anyone wanting to participate in the contest should call 205-299-6787 to register.
Meanwhile, the ribs cooked in the barbecue contest will be sold by the plate, for $6 each, with all proceeds from this contest also being donated.
Contestants will need to bring their own ribs (organizers request enough for at least 20 plates), grills and anything else needed.
