Clanton’s City Council will hold a work session next week to discuss efforts to construct a new youth softball facility in the city, and other ongoing projects.

Representatives of the city’s youth softball league addressed the council and Mayor Billy Joe Driver in July 2013 about the need for an upgraded facility.

Driver and council members agreed to work toward a new facility, and dirt from work at the Chilton County Airport was moved to the proposed softball facility site, adjacent to Clanton City Park and visible from Highway 31, in the weeks after.

But little, if any, progress has been made since then.

Councilman Jeff Price asked at Monday’s regular meeting about the status of the project, saying residents in his district had contacted him for an update.

Driver said other ongoing projects, including site preparation for four proposed storm shelters, have delayed work on the softball fields. He also said the council would need to decide how the city will obtain the dirt needed at the site.

Price’s motion to schedule a work session for 5 p.m. on Sept. 2 was approved unanimously.

In other business, the council:

•Appointed Jackie Baker to the city’s Utility Board.

•Approved the additions of Justin Gray, Robert Kiekel, Jeff Brown and Michael Hayes to the Clanton Police Department’s reserve/auxiliary program.

•Approved the removal of Freddie Mayfield and Steve Tate from the police department’s part-time officer roster.

•Heard from Emerson Roebuck, who said he plans to start a taxi cab service that would serve the city. Roebuck was asked to visit with City Clerk Debbie Orange during business hours to go over the city’s regulations about such a service.

•Heard from Carl Zeigler, who said the local NAACP chapter hosted its quarterly meeting at the Alabama Power building in Clanton, and thanked the city’s police officials who met with he and others with the organization.

•Approved the minutes from the Aug. 11 meeting, and the paying of necessary bills.
