Volunteers help build home for Clanton family

Roughly 20 volunteers from Alabama Power Company Service Organization spent the morning Wednesday helping to build a house for a Clanton family.
“We are out here working on three different tasks today,” said Jane Conradi with Alabama Power. “We are working on the vinyl siding, the wheelchair ramp, and we are finishing the insulation.”
The group is just part of many different volunteers in the community who have stepped up to help Charlene and Josh Dennis and their son Zachary through Habitat for Humanity of Autauga and Chilton Counties.
Habitat is partnering with the Dennis family, Clanton Lions Club and Clanton Evening Lions Club to build a house for the family to better accommodate Zachary, 19, who is wheelchair bound because of a car wreck he was in several years ago.
Habitat for Humanity of Autauga and Chilton Counties Executive Director Tom Risher was also at the site Wednesday guiding the crew of volunteers on different tasks needing to be accomplished.
“We hope to start insulation tomorrow,” Risher said.
Risher said a tentative home dedication has been set for Sept. 14.
Work on the home started at the beginning of July.
Many of the volunteers came from Chilton County and Montgomery to spend time working on the home, but Risher said multiple groups have helped out at the home.
Some of the volunteers throughout the last couple of weeks have included, the Clanton First United Methodist Church, Maxwell Air Force Base and Gunter Annex, Poplar Springs Baptist Church, volunteers with Habitat for Humanity of Autauga and Chilton Counties, Clanton Lions Club and Clanton Evening Lions Club and Alabama Power Company.
“The thing that is great about volunteering is you don’t have to be knowledgeable about working at a construction site to show up and help,” Conradi said. “There are people here who will help you figure out what to do.”
The home is located off County Road 459 in Clanton.
