The Clanton Post Office will hold a Passport Fair on Saturday from 9-11 a.m. for anyone needing to purchase a passport.

This is the first year the Clanton location is holding the fair and is the only post office location in Chilton County where people can apply for a passport.

“So many people are traveling, and we are the only post office location between Pelham and Montgomery where you can get your passport,” Clanton Post Office Clerk Donna Wyatt said. “I have heard the wait time at other locations is about six weeks until you can get a Saturday appointment, so for a lot of people it is easier to come here.”

Wyatt said in 2013, roughly 1,000 people applied for a passport at the Clanton Post Office.

“You have people who are going out of the country for a missions trip, a honeymoon or a vacation,” Wyatt said. “Also, if you go on a cruise ship now they are requiring a passport.”

Although applications for passports can be filled out Monday-Friday from 10:15 a.m.-2:15 p.m. at the post office with an appointment, Wyatt said Saturday will not require an appointment.

“We will have extra staff to be able to accommodate everyone who wants to come and apply for their passport on Saturday,” Wyatt said. “The process will be faster, and no appointment is needed.”

The total price for a passport book, card and processing fee is $152.25 with a wait period of 4-6 weeks for individuals to receive their passport.

Wyatt said for those needing a passport expedited, the cost is $247.06 with a wait period of three weeks.

Wyatt said for anyone wishing to apply for a passport, they must fill out a form that can be picked up at the Clanton Post Office or online at www.travel.state.gov.

“If people have their forms already filled out before they come on Saturday, it should be a really fast process,” Wyatt said.

Other items required to apply for a passport include a picture ID (driver’s license or state identification card) and proof of citizenship (certified birth certificate or naturalized certificate if a naturalized citizen).

The Clanton Post Office is located at 608 6th St. S. in Clanton.
