Fresh off a big region win over Keith last Friday night, the Billingsley Bears made it two wins in less than a week’s time with a win against the Ellwood Christian Eagles, 38-12, on Thursday night.
After a quick three-and-out to start the game, the Bears (5-2 overall, 3-2 region) found the end zone on their second possession of the night, driving 46 yards for a touchdown capped off by a Thomas Nichols one-yard touchdown run.
A Nichols-to-Telvin Tyus two-point conversion gave the Bears an early 8-0 lead.
Nichols found Dalton Davis in the end zone for a 26-yard touchdown pass with 3:04 left in the first half to give the Bears a 16-0 lead.
The Eagles came right back with the ensuing drive, going 61 yards for a touchdown on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Jalen Furlow to Rayford Mitchell to pull within 10 of the Bears at the half, 16-6.
Driving deep into Eagles territory with their first drive of the second half, a Bears fumble was picked up by Mitchell and returned 97 yards for an Eagles touchdown to make the score 16-12 early in the third quarter.
After two possessions by both teams resulted in no points to end the third quarter, the Bears turned it up a notch in the fourth, scoring on three consecutive possessions.
Nichols connected with Keyjuan Goodson for 41 yards and a touchdown to make it 22-12 in favor of Billingsley.
After a three-and-out by the Eagles, Terrance Nolen took a Nichols hand off 65 yards for a touchdown and a 30-12 Billingsley lead.
A fumble on the ensuing kickoff gave the Bears the ball back at the Eagles 26-yard line, where a Tommy Williams 24-yard carry set up a Nolen two-yard touchdown.
Nichols connected with Hunter Neely for two to bring the score to its final, 38-12.
“We give up two scores on turnovers, but our defense has turned the corner and played really well the past couple of weeks,” Billingsley coach Tyson McLean said.
Nichols led the way for the Bears with 209 all-purpose yards including two passing touchdowns and one rushing TD.
Furlow led the way for the Eagles with 46 yards on 10 carries.
