Men’s spotlight

Taylor Hughes (Chilton County 2010) posted nearly 300 total yards and three touchdowns as a quarterback for Huntingdon College (3-0, 1-0 USA South Athletic Conference) in a 56-35 triumph at home against Ferrum College (0-4, 0-1 USASAC) on Sept. 28 in Montgomery.

The senior did not start the competition but came in late in the first quarter to cap a six-play, 75-yard drive with a 22-yard TD pass to Brantley Carr at the 2:06 mark for a 21-7 Huntingdon lead.

At the 13:59 mark of the third quarter, Hughes launched 56-yard bomb to Zach Camp for his second TD pass of the game to conclude a three-play, 70-yard drive for a 42-28 Huntingdon advantage.

Hughes contributed his third score at the 8:02 mark of the fourth quarter on a 5-yard rush to close an eight-play, 65-yard drive for a 49-35 lead.

The senior concluded the contest by completing 16-of-21 pass attempts for 253 yards and added 37 yards rushing on three carries, while splitting time at the quarterback position with Ryne Taylor.

Ryne Taylor ended the game by completing 12-of-16 passes for 209 yards and a touchdown and totaling 27 yards rushing on five carries.

For the season, Hughes has completed 29-of-41 pass attempts (70 percent) complemented by 448 yards, five total touchdowns and one-game winning drive.

Zachary Wilson (Billingsley 2012) is the defending national champion in the tie-down roping competition, and the sophomore opened his season for West Alabama with a victory in the short go-around at the Viking Stampede Rodeo at Missouri Valley College from Sept. 26-28 in Marshall, Mo.

Women’s spotlight

Kasi Wells (Jemison 2011) posted more than 10 assists in four games en route to leading Cumberland (12-10) to a 2-2 record at home at the Cumberland Classic from Sept. 27-28 in Lebanon, Tenn.

On Day 1 of the tournament, the junior opened with 11 assists, five kills, five blocks and two digs en route to a 3-0 victory against Tennessee Temple.

In Game 2 of the opening day, she added 19 assists, three blocks and two digs in a 3-0 sweep of Kentucky Christian (11-4).

On Day 2, she provided 12 assists, four kills, three digs and one block in a 3-0 loss against Ohio Valley (6-11).
