Though it was homecoming, the Isabella Mustangs (5-0) proved early and often that there was no lack of focus on their sideline during a 45-6 win over Verbena on Friday night.
Isabella wasted no time in showing just how focused they were, as De’Rodgus Campbell fielded the opening kickoff and took it 80 yards for the touchdown to put the Mustangs up early 7-0.
The Mustangs scored on four of their next six possessions of the first half on three Tyler Smith touchdown runs and a Chanley Ratliff field goal. The Mustangs would go to the locker room up 31-0.
Late in the third quarter, Jacob Carroll would go in from 1 yard out to give the Mustangs a 38-0 lead.
The Red Devils were determined not to allow the shutout and a 23-yard touchdown pass from Tristan Short to Dejuan Tyus put the Red Devils on the score board at 38-6 late in the third quarter.
Casey Jones found his way into the end zone from 13 yards out to bring the score to 45-6.
“We’re always happy to win homecoming,” Isabella Coach Scott Booth, “Our boys came out and finally from the word go started playing some pretty good football.”
Smith lead the way for the Mustangs with 119 yards on 9 carries and 3 touchdowns.
Jamaul Underwood led the Red Devils with 38 yards on seven carries.
