The Chilton County Commission unanimously voted Monday to accept bid proposals for potential work to be done at the Chilton County Jail.

During the bid opening process, Commission chairman Allen Caton reviewed one bid submitted to the commission from Unique Security for mechanical work on the jail door system for $15,000.

Commissioner Heedy Hayes made a motion to accept the bid and give it to Sheriff Kevin Davis to review before a decision could be made.

Davis was not at Monday’s meeting.

Caton also reviewed bids for security cameras at the jail and told commissioners out of seven bids sent out, only three were returned with pricing.

Unique Security sent a base bid of $181,854.00,

Montgomery Electronics and Communications Services sent a base bid for $128,960.00 for repairs, and Pinnacle Network Solutions sent a base bid for $69,705.00.

The commission made a motion to accept the bids and allow Davis to review them and report back to the commission.

Davis originally presented a report to the commission regarding security issues at the Chilton County Jail during the April 8 meeting.

Although exact details about what work needs to be done has been withheld from the commission meetings, Davis told commissioners in April a safety survey had been conducted on the jail.

During the survey through the Association of County Commissioners of Alabama (ACCA), three recommendations were made about the jail although specifics were not publicly presented during the meeting.

Davis presented commissioners with a $135,000 estimate for the repairs but said he would not know exact totals until the bids for the work were placed.

Part of the money for the repairs will come out of $460,000 the state granted to the county for the use of capital improvements with the rest of the money coming out of the sheriff’s jail account.

The commission also unanimously voted during a public hearing to close a portion of County Road 334.

Allen Bearden originally requested the public hearing during the commission meeting on June 10.

Commissioners Greg Moore, Joe Headley, Hayes, Tim Mims, Caton and Shannon Welch voted to close a portion of the road.

Commissioner Bobby Agee was absent from Monday’s meeting.
