Although Wednesday ushered in the month of May, a cold front coming through this weekend will bring chilly temperatures in the high 50s to low 60s.

“It is going to get chilly this weekend,” meteorologist Aaron Gleason with the National Weather Service in Birmingham said. “The storm system moving through is going to be very cold and unseasonable resembling something we would tend to get in the winter.”

Gleason said rain will come into the area late Friday night into Saturday morning with fairly significant rainfall totals for Chilton County.

Predictions of more than an inch of rain should fall into Saturday with the rain tapering off by late Saturday afternoon.

“There will be a little break from the rain Saturday afternoon but an upper level storm system will bring cooler temperatures on Sunday and Monday,” Gleason said.

No severe weather is in the forecast but Gleason said this will more than likely not be the last cold front of the spring season before summer weather officially settles in.

“I don’t think it is going to get drastically cooler before summer,” Gleason said. “However, we will probably still see a few cooler fronts that come through before the summer season officially begins.”

The weekend temperatures will see highs in the upper 50s and low 60s and lows in the lower 40s before warming up on Tuesday.

“It is going to be cooler on Sunday and Monday morning due to that cold front coming through that is bringing unseasonable temperatures,” Gleason said. “The good news is we don’t have any severe weather in the forecast which isn’t uncommon for this time of year.”
