Organizers for the second annual Jingle Bell Run/Walk will host a kick-off celebration for the race at First United Methodist Church on Oct. 23 at noon. Development and services coordinator of the Arthritis Foundation of Central Alabama Anna Blanche Young said the purpose for the kick-off celebration is to reintroduce the event to the community.
“We will have speakers and information to hand out about the event,” Young said. “We will also have opportunities to register for the event itself.”
Young said last year’s race was the first one for Chilton County with about $15,000 raised for the Arthritis Foundation.
“There was a wonderful turnout last year with a lot of runners and walkers showing up to race,” Young said. “We hope there will be a larger turnout this year.”
Young said organizers decided to change the race from a Sunday to a Saturday this year with the race being on Dec. 15.
“This is a family-friendly event,” Young said. “We have events for all ages to participate in, and we hope it is a fun way for everyone to get into the holiday spirit while supporting a great cause. Also, when you register for the race you receive a long-sleeve T-shirt.”
Those participating in the race are encouraged to dress in festive attire and will receive a pair of bells to attach to their tennis shoes at the start of the run/walk.
“I think the most enjoyable part of the event is seeing the community participate in a very festive atmosphere,” Young said.
According to the Arthritis Foundation, more than 50 million Americans have been diagnosed with arthritis by a doctor, resulting in arthritis becoming the leading cause of disability in the United States.
Young said anyone interested in learning more about the race in December is invited to attend the kick-off celebration but must RSVP by contacting Anna Blanche Young at (205) 314-8440 or ayoung@arthritis.org.
