After trying out something different last year, the annual Peach Classic Fishing Tournament will go back to a familiar format.

Tournament organizers, with the Rotary Club of Chilton County, experimented with fishing at night last June to avoid the high temperatures, but the competitors wanted to return to familiar settings.

“We took a poll of the fishermen that were in the tournament last year,” said Carl Mims, event coordinator and Rotary club member. “Most agreed that they thought a day tournament would be better. Hopefully that’s the case.”

Beating the heat shouldn’t be too much of a problem, as the Rotary club is awarding a cool $1,000 to the winner of the Peach Classic. Capturing first place won’t be easy either; Mims expects a big turnout.

“The past few years, we’ve had 60 boats,” he said. “Hopefully that will improve this year as the economy improves. We would like to have between 80 and 100 and build up from there.”

Despite the stiff competition, Mims wants to make sure everyone knows the tournament is held for a good cause.

“This is one of our fundraisers for the year. The money raised is donated back into the community,” he said. “We give two scholarships to area students, sponsor two students to a week long leadership conference, sponsor the Christmas Parade, and donate to various other organizations within the county.”
