Four Indiana high school students returning home from spring break and a Troy man were killed Saturday in an accident on Interstate 65 near Verbena.

Alabama State Troopers identified the teens as Alexx Bauer, Matthew Roe, Evan Weaver and Matthew  Zimmer, all 18 and from the same high school in Angola, Ind., near the Michigan/Ohio border.

Niall McNellis, 21, of Troy also died in the accident.

Troopers said the accident occurred when the southbound 2005 Chrysler minivan McNellis was driving crossed the median and struck the northbound 2009 Ford Taurus driven by Zimmer head-on.

The accident occurred at approximately 3:05 p.m. Saturday at the 199-mile marker near the Chilton/Autauga county line.

A female driver of a third vehicle and her two children received non-life threatening injuries and were treated at a local hospital, troopers said.

The accident remains under investigation.
