Chilton County is home to a good number of artists, as has been exhibited by the few art exhibits and competitions held here in recent years. But, as one local artist has pointed out, there are not many opportunities within our county’s borders for artists to find exposure or an outlet for their talent.

Elizabeth Byrd wants to help change all that by founding the Chilton County Arts Council, a group that would encompass not only visual arts but also culinary arts, music, theatre, ballet and other disciplines.

“I’ve lived here all my life, and it has always been difficult for any artist in Chilton County to be encouraged or rewarded,” Byrd told The Clanton Advertiser.

The idea is for the council to provide a way for local artists to showcase their talent without having to seek help outside of the county. This could be done through art shows and galleries, but the council could also have a hand in teaching art to county students. This could be accomplished through council members volunteering to teach at after-school programs that are already up and running.

Byrd has scheduled a meeting at her home, located at 536 Thrash Road in Clanton, for Sunday, Jan. 30 at 2 p.m.

Byrd, who has entered her own work in shows sponsored by the Shelby County Arts Council, says the Chilton County council would be modeled after the Shelby County group.

We think this idea couldn’t have come at a better time. As the county grows and becomes more affluent, there will be a natural progression toward the fine arts. This will come through artists in need of a stage, as well as a more diverse audience that will increase the demand for—as well as the appreciation of—artistic expression.
