It’s the next best thing to a yard sale — or perhaps better, depending on the weather. The Chilton County Humane Society is already seeing success with its new thrift store on Highway 31 in Clanton.

Second Chances Thrift Store held its grand opening Saturday and raised more than $400 on its first day to benefit the local shelter.

“We now have the store open, and we just hope that everybody will come out. People who like yard sales will love our store,” said Wilma DeVaughn, store manager, known to friends as “Nana.”

DeVaughn and Lisa Chadwick, the humane society’s fundraising chairwoman, along with relatives, volunteer at the store Thursday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 1-5 p.m.

They accept donations of pretty much anything — knick-knacks, decorative items, furniture, clothing and more. The only things they cannot accept are TVs and computers.

All proceeds go to benefit the humane society, with the exception of utility bills. The building is also being rented for free.

“I’m thrilled about it. It’s a real relief to have a source of supplemental income,” said humane society director Joe Murphy, commending the volunteers and board members for their efforts.

“I actually bought a few items, and from what I understand it was a great success,” Murphy added. “The supply will constantly be replenished, and there will always be something new there. It’s also an easy way for people to clear out their house without going through the hassle of a yard sale.”
