Maplesville could name Kurt Wallace’s successor as mayor as early as Thursday night.

The Maplesville Town Council will hold a special meeting Thursday to discuss who will become’s the town’s next top official.

Wallace beat incumbent Jimmy Martin on Tuesday in a race for State Representative for House District 42. He will be sworn into that office on Nov. 7.

Wallace will resign as Maplesville’s mayor on Thursday. The mayor pro temp will then direct the meeting as the council discusses who will follow Wallace.

The council could choose and swear in a new mayor Thursday, or wait on making a final decision until their next regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 9.

State law says the council has up to 60 days to name a new mayor. If no one is selected after two months, Alabama’s governor is charged with appointing someone.

Any current member of the council, as well as any town resident who meets requirements for the office, are eligible for the office.

The new mayor would serve the remainder of Wallace’s term, through the election of 2012.

Thursday’s meeting will take place at 6 p.m. at Maplesville’s Town Library.
