The first ever Spay-ghetti Dinner was a success Saturday, raising $700 in ticket sales and a grand total of $1,000 for the Chilton County Humane Society.

Humane Society Board president Colleen Kennedy thanked all who supported the fundraiser, which she hopes to make an annual event.

“We appreciate everyone who came out as well as those who purchased tickets but weren’t able to come out,” Kennedy said. “We thank all the local merchants who made this possible. I think for our first runaround we were very successful, and for the years to come it will just keep growing.”

The dinner saw an attendance of 204 at the Helen Parrish Activity Center. The food was prepared by Frank Bonagura.

All proceeds will go directly to the humane society.

The society plans to apply for a grant that would fund renovations to the local shelter. The greatest needs include a new central heating and air system, a fresh coat of paint and new flooring for the front area.

“Hopefully, we’ll be able to get those things within 12 months,” Kennedy said.

The humane society has started several new fundraising ventures in the past year. Recently, they celebrated the grand opening of Second Chances Thrift Store on Seventh Street in Clanton. The store has raised several hundred dollars every day since it has been open, reported media chairwoman Naomi Absher.
