As basketball season for high school squads hit Christmas break, the middle school season recently came to an end with some impressive showings from local teams. From bounce back seasons to a continuation of a solid last few years — Clanton, Jemison and Thorsby Middle Schools had stellar seasons on the hardwood that will be remembered for many years.

Thorsby Middle School Girls Basketball

Thorsby’s girls at the middle school level put together their first undefeated season in nine years as the Rebels completed their 2024 campaign at 10-0 overall. Led by head coach Kris Wood, Thorsby was able to navigate their season without a blemish on its record.

“My coaching staff and I are so proud of and happy for our girls. It had been nine years since we have had an undefeated season with our junior high teams at Thorsby,” Wood said. “These girls came to practices in a hot gym in the summer, worked hard, kept a good attitude and it paid off during the season. We are just really happy for them, and looking forward to the future with them.”

Jemison Middle School Boys Basketball

Another North Chilton team that had a fantastic season was the Jemison Middle School boys basketball team. Led by coaches Steve Karn and Forrest Knight, the Panthers finished the season with just one loss on its record at 11-1.

The turnaround for the Panthers was a sight to see after they went 1-11 during the 2023 season just a year before. Karn said each game featured a different player that stepped up when the team needed it, leading to an unpredictable and tough to beat Panthers’ team.

“We have worked hard on the basics — shooting, ball handling, passing, defense,” Karn said. “But the main difference in games was our defense.”

Karn added that the turnaround for the team this year was a testament to their growth, resilience and commitment to hard work.

Clanton Middle School Girls Basketball

The Tigers put together a great season after setting an 8-0 goal in the preseason and coming in with a 7-1 final record. After a slip up in the season opener, CMS put together a seven-game winning streak to end the season. Led by head coach Braylon Parker, the Tigers established themselves as a formidable force in the county at the middle-school level.
