The General Election in Chilton County was historic as the county had its highest voting output ever with just under 20,000 ballots cast on Nov. 5.
Chilton County Probate Judge Jason Calhoun and the Chilton County Office finished their final canvassing of the results on Nov. 12, and the final number of 19,825 ballots cast was a new record for the county. The 19,825 ballots cast represents around 66% of the residents in Chilton County. The record-breaking number has all the possibilities to be broken again in upcoming elections as 34% of the county can still get out and vote to make their voices heard.
“It was a great turnout,” Calhoun said at the Nov. 13 Chilton County Commission meeting. “I was pushing for 70 and above, we got 66%, so that is pretty close.”
There were no major changes to any race from the unofficial results on Nov. 5 to the official results, but some candidates did receive a few more votes after the numbers were finalized. First-time candidates Butch Billingsley, Alan Childress, Sheila Hall and Roger Perkins were voted into the Chilton County Commission by its citizens with 129,015 votes cast for the race. All citizens could vote seven times in the commission race, and could vote for a candidate as many times out of the seven votes as they choose.
The official results from the Chilton County Probate Office shows Childress (18,603 votes) taking 14.41% of the vote, the highest among the 11 candidates. Perkins (15,794 votes) received 12.23%, Billingsley (11,849 votes) 9.18% and Hall (11,403 votes) 8.83%.
Incumbents Darrel Bone (17,982 votes, 13.93%), Allen Williams (16,718 votes, 12.95%) and Joseph Headley (11,134 votes, 8.62%) all retained their seats on the commission. Jimmie Hardee (10,896 votes, 8.44%) and Randell Kelley (7,850 votes, 6.08%) did not crack the top seven vote getters and lost their seats on the commission.
The monumental turnout by voters in Chilton County is a great indicator of people not being afraid to utilize their rights. It is now more paramount than ever for citizens to have a voice, and Chilton County residents took full advantage of that this election season.
