Maplesville, AL – In celebration of Alabama Woods to Goods Week, the Chilton County Natural Resources Council, in collaboration with ForestryWorks®, hosted the Chilton County Forestry Career Day. The event welcomed 30 students from Isabella High School, providing them with a firsthand look at the forest industry and the array of career opportunities it offers.
The highlight of the day was a tour of the West Fraser mill in Maplesville, where students learned about the lumber manufacturing process. The tour allowed participants to better understand the positive impact the mill has on their community and the number of jobs it creates.
After the mill tour, students enjoyed lunch at a local landowner’s property and had the opportunity to interact with professionals from various organizations, including the Alabama Forestry Commission, Alabama State Parks, Alabama Department of Wildlife & Fisheries, Thompson Tractor, Reynolds Lumber, Natural Resource Conservation Service, and Alabama Cooperative Extension Service. These experts shared valuable insights about their careers, discussing the pathways and skills necessary to succeed in forestry-related careers.
Alabama Woods to Goods Week is a week-long promotional event to celebrate forestry’s professionals, products and industry. It is a public-private partnership with the Alabama Forestry Association, the Alabama Forestry Commission, the Alabama Forestry Foundation, the Forest Workforce Training Institute, the Alabama Sustainable Forestry Initiative and the Alabama Association of Resource Conservation and Development Councils.
Governor Kay Ivey proclaimed the third week in October as Alabama Woods to Goods Week which coincides with National Forest Products Week.
We celebrated the week across the state with mill tours, log site visits, forest product donations and many other educational events to highlight the industry’s environmental, community and economic impact.
