Jemison High School’s Chaz Melton is this week’s athlete of the week for Oct. 25-31 following his performance against Montevallo High School on Oct. 25. Melton was the most versatile player for the Panthers behind a strong showing from their offensive line in the team’s first win of the 2024 season, 30-22 over visiting Montevallo.
The senior running back punched in a trio of touchdown runs — two from two yards out and the other from three yards out. He amassed 118 yards on 22 carries and made a catch. Melton also came to play on the defensive side of the ball making eight tackles and adding a sack and a pass break up.
Honorable mention: Landon Jones, Billingsley High School
In his final game for both Billingsley High School and playing for his father, Lanny Jones, quarterback Landon Jones ended his high school football career with a solid performance in both phases. The senior posted a 16-for-24 passing effort for 247 yards and two touchdowns, and he added 55 yards and a touchdown on the ground in six carries. On defense, he made a team high 16 tackles with three coming for a loss.
Honorable mention: Caleb Short, Verbena High School
Verbena High School senior defensive back Caleb Short has established himself as having some of the strongest ball skills in the county, and they were on display on Oct 25 against Maplesville High School. His ability to hang around the back half of the Verbena defense and make split-second decisions once the ball is thrown has proved vital to their success this season. Short was able to pick off two passes for the Red Devils, and both were high lofted balls that he was able to break on, rise above the wide receiver and make a play on the ball.
