Thorsby High School put itself in the driver’s seat for a playoff spot with a 42-12 win over Dallas County High School on Oct. 11 on the road. The Rebels overpowered the home team to break a two-game skid while also improving its Class 3A Region 3 record to 3-2.

“They played good,” Thorsby head coach Daryl Davis said. “We got off to a bit of a slow start, but we got it together. Our goal when we moved up to 3A was to make sure we made it to the playoffs. It was a very important game (for that), and they came out and played hard.”

Thorsby quarterbacks Grayson McManus and Braylon Carroll combined to go 5-for-6 passing with four of their five completions going for touchdowns, two apiece. McManus threw for 131 yards on his perfect 3-for-3 effort, and added 83 yards on 11 carries. Brooks Barnett grabbed all of McManus’ completions and had three receiving touchdowns. Lucas Jackson had the final touchdown grab. Carroll got into the end zone on the ground while running for 58 yards, and Tyler Lockhart added a rushing score, all adding up to 446 total yards for the Rebels.

“They are hanging in there and trusting in what we are doing, and after getting beat two weeks in a row it is hard to hang in there like that and keep working, but they have,” Davis said. “Good things are coming, and we have a big game next week.”

Malachi Allgood led the Thorsby defense with 16 tackles and two coming for a loss. Allgood added a sack as the Rebels piled up seven sacks in the game — two for Barnett, two for Christopher Buendtner and one each for Allgood, Kevin Tyus and Malcolm Lezama.

Thorsby (3-4) has two more region games to solidify its spot in the state football playoffs, and will start with a trip to Greensboro High School on Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
