Isabella High School got a signature win for its season on Oct. 11 taking down Greene County High School 52-32 with its highest point output of the season. The Mustangs’ win was also their first Class 2A Region 5 win of the year, and gives them wins in two out of their last three games.
The offense was clicking on all cylinders as Isabella had three running backs go for over 100 yards — Javarius Craig, Levi Wilkins and Jedaiah Works. Works led the trio of backs with 144 yards and four touchdowns, including the first three scores of the game that opened up an early lead. Craig ran for 138 yards and a touchdown and Wilkins had 107 yards.
Austin Porter added a 13-yard touchdown carry just before halftime to make it four possessions and maximum points for Isabella in the opening half converting all four two-point conversions, and a 32-18 lead. Isabella scored on every possession the offense had, and Garrett Price made his return to the Mustangs’ lineup and the end zone in the third quarter, his first action since the first game of the season on Aug. 22.
“I was very pleased with (the way they played), and Greene County is a really hot team in our region and having a great year, so we knew we had to come out and really perform,” Isabella head coach Tate Leonard said. “I thought they did great. Our offense was clicking, and coach Jared day did an awesome job having those guys ready, and the defense made plays when they needed to. I was very proud of them.”
Isabella needed just two passes during its heavy rushing attack to post its most prolific offensive performance of the season. Their defense was able to make those timing plays, like two interceptions by Brendyn Kirkland and two sacks by Lane Mims, and pulled away down the stretch.
“I think we are a good football team that has kind of gotten in our own way with some turnovers in key games, penalties and self-inflicted wounds,” Leonard said. “We have not really changed anything, just executing what we are capable of doing.”
Isabella (3-5) finishes its season in region over the next two weeks, and with two wins, could slide into the fourth spot in the standings and extend their state playoff streak to nine consecutive seasons. The Mustangs square off with Vincent High School in the first of those two games on Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
