Verbena High School stayed perfect and earned a homecoming win in a 36-24 triumph over Gaylesville High School on Sept. 28.
The visitors wasted no time and returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown to go up 6-0. Verbena got its offense started on the right foot, tying the game on their first possession with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Morris from Hayden Wilson, and the two-point conversion put the Red Devils on top 8-6 where that score stood till the end of the first quarter.
The teams traded touchdowns with Morris getting into the end zone before Gaylesville scored again before halftime to go into the break up 18-14.
Wilson took in a touchdown run in the second half to regain the lead for Verbena, and the Red Devils stretched it out in the early stages of the fourth quarter to 28-18. Gaylesville kept it close with a score, but Wilson found Jackson Brothers for a 32-yard touchdown connection to ice the game after the two-point conversion made it a 12-point affair.
Verbena’s (5-0) trek to a perfect season is halfway there, and it goes back to Class 1A Region 4 play hosting Notasulga High School on Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
