Do you like barbecue? I could not imagine many people not raising their hands, if I posed the question to a crowded room. If so, then you qualify to attend the second annual Central Alabama BBQ Festival.
For those who attended last year, the Fest’s venue has switched to the Chilton County Airport this year. It will take place on Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. until approximately 5 p.m.
You may have heard that the BBQ Fest is an official Kansas City Barbeque Society competition (note the different spelling of “barbeque” in this instance; that is on purpose because that is how the organization spells it). Anyway, you would be correct to assume that this competition is for serious competitors, but if you are not one, don’t let that keep you from attending. It is for all ages, and you will have plenty of opportunities to taste some great recipes.
I would suggest arriving as early as possible, as free barbecue sandwiches will be available (one per person) while supplies last. While general admission is free, for just $10 you can participate in the People’s Choice category as a judge to help decide which team has the best Boston butt.
The KCBS portion will feature ribs and chicken prepared by the nearly 20 teams coming to Chilton County from multiple states. I am guessing there will be samples of these available at some, if not all, of the booths for each team.
Other activities at this year’s Central BBQ Fest include live music from the Johnny Cash cover band “Cash Back” and local performers. I have not personally heard Cash Back, but I am sure longtime Johnny Cash fans like myself will enjoy them.
Car lovers will appreciate the cruise-in that will accompany the event on site, as well as an appearance by the monster truck Heaven Bound Mud Bogger. And for the kids, there will be inflatables, face painting, pine derby racing and more.
It’s hard to imagine a better time than the Central Alabama BBQ Fest, so head on out to the Chilton County Airport on Sept. 28.
