Jemison High School was half a quarter away from their first win of the season, but a late comeback by Sipsey Valley High School downed the Panthers 40-28.
Jemison was firing on all cylinders to start the game and throughout the first half with a pair of passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown to hold a 21-14 lead at the break. The lead stood firm in the third quarter before the Panthers extended their lead to 28-14 with another touchdown through the air.
“It’s tough, no doubt,” Jemison head coach Rishard Davis said. “We came out strong in the first half and showed what we’re capable of, but we have to learn how to close games. The effort is there, but we need to execute for a full 48 minutes. We’ll get back to work, fix what needs fixing and keep pushing. These guys have heart, and I believe in them.”
After Jemison went up by two scores, it was all Sipsey Valley to finish the game as they ripped off 26 unanswered points to earn the 40-28 Class 5A Region 3 win.
Jemison (0-5) steps out of region on Sept. 27 in its next game, traveling to Sylacauga High School for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
