Maplesville High School’s Pearce Yeargan is this week’s athlete of the week for Aug.30-Sept. 5 following his performance against Isabella High School on Aug. 30. The Class 1A powerhouse has been notorious for its tenacious running attack over the years, but Maplesville may now have a wrinkle in its offense that it has not had in many years with Yeargan leading the offense.

Yeargan’s statistics on paper will not blow you away with a modest 11-for-22 passing for 150 yards and two touchdowns, but the manner in which he did it was what was impressive. The Red Devils have had quarterbacks in past few years that were capable of throwing the ball, but there is something different about Yeargan under center. He is poised, calm and confident in the pocket. There were many throws where he was scrambling outside of the pocket and was able to tell his receivers where he needed them to go, and led them there perfectly with his pass.

“We have a lot of guys that can catch the ball, and a lot of guys that can do things in open space,” Brad Abbott, Maplesville head coach, said following the game. “Pierce Yeargan does a great job as a smart quarterback distributing the ball.”

The Red Devils will be without their top production player from last season in running back Nehemiah McCary for the first handful of weeks this season. However, it looks like right now McCary is not being dearly missed with the way the Red Devils’ offense was able to put up points against Isabella. Once McCary returns to the backfield, the sky is the limit for a team that knows what it takes to win a state championship, and now a more than capable quarterback under center to boot.
