Do you like writing? Do you want to help inform the community? Do you want to have a side hustle while gaining great experience? If you answered yes to any of those questions, The Clanton Advertiser would love to hear from you and see if you would be a good fit as a freelance writer!
Some may remember the newsroom at the Advertiser office when it was full of staff. I have had many people come in and say, “Wow, it is empty in here now,” or “I remember when this place was packed.” That was before my time as I have only had one other writer on staff with me at most in my over two years here. Now, with only one writer on staff for almost a year, it is time to expand our freelancer pool.
We are looking for contributors who want to generate their own ideas themselves, and then connect with the business, person, entity, etc. to conduct interviews and generate a story. We can also assign freelancers a story to do with contacts to connect with, if more guidance is something they prefer. Each freelancer would only have one story each week, and a maximum of two if they feel comfortable with that workload, and a freelancer does not have to contribute an article each week to stay a freelancer. It can be one week on, two weeks off, or a weekly article or column, whatever fits best for the prospective freelancer.
All of our stories are written in AP style, and any questions someone has about that I can answer. I will also be editing any story that is written as well before print so any style changes I should catch as well. The length of the article or column can vary each week, but we normally try to keep them at a minimum 300 words, but less than 1,000 words. We do offer compensation for freelancers as well paying $30 per story. Submissions for stories completed are sent each week, so payment for stories should happen within a few weeks after submissions.
If you think you are interested in freelance work with The Clanton Advertiser, please send a resume, two writing samples and any contact information to news@clantonadvertiser.com to be considered for a freelancer role. We appreciate everyone’s readership, and look forward to adding talented writers in Chilton County to our freelance staff.
