Thorsby High School’s Aiden Seeley is this week’s athlete of the week after his performances during the week of April 5-11.

The old narrative that one player cannot win a game is normally right. However, if there was ever an exception to that, it may have been on April 5 as Thorsby traveled to Reeltown High School for a doubleheader. The Rebels lost to Reeltown the day before at home, and they needed a win to be on the doorstep of a spot in the AHSAA Class 2A state playoffs.

The game saw only two hits and no runs through the first seven innings of play as a true pitcher’s duel unfolded. Seeley pumped in strikes by the tens, throwing 62 of his 86 pitches for a strike. He made it through seven innings surrendering just two hits with six strikeouts.

Thorsby was able to manufacture a run in the top of the eighth inning after two errors, one forced by a perfectly laid bunt. With a 1-0 lead, and a spot in the playoffs likely with the win, Seeley struck out the first batter on three pitches, and followed with a quick ground out and a pop out to retire Reeltown in order and claim the win. Seeley’s final line was eight innings, two hits, no runs, no walks and seven strikeouts.

Seeley did not throw the rest of the week following his stellar outing, and anything he did at the plate was icing on the cake. He contributed a 3-for-3 effort with a double in game two of the doubleheader with Reeltown on April 5, and went 1-for-5 on April 6 against B.B. Comer High School. He concluded the week with a 1-for-1 showing with a two-RBI double and drew three walks on April 8 in a 17-2 win over B.B. Comer.

 

Honorable mention: Jaycee Quinn, Verbena High School

Verbena High School’s ace pitcher Jaycee Quinn has had an up and down year in 2024, but she looked like her old, dominant self during the week of April 5-11 helping the Red Devils to a 4-1 record.

Quinn dominated in both facets on April 6 at Jemison High School. Quinn boosted the Red Devils to a 2-1 tournament showing with a perfect day going 5-for-5 with a double, a home run and two RBIs. She threw six and two-third innings and gave up three hits, one run and struck out seven batters across the three games.

Quinn showed her vintage stuff on April 8 against Dallas County High School throwing a complete seven innings and surrendering just two hits and one run while striking out 19 batters. She was 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and three RBIs to do damage there as well. Quinn’s impressive week ended on April 9 against Billingsley High School throwing another complete game, this one a five-inning affair surrendering four hits and no runs with nine strikeouts. She was 1-for-3 with an RBI at the plate.
