Chilton County High School’s varsity boy’s soccer team were named co-champions of the Lakeshore Shootout in Alabaster and Calera. The tournament was held from Feb. 9-10, and the Tigers went 3-0 in their games to claim a share of the title, and move to 5-0 on the season overall.
“The goal for the tournament was to leave with three wins, and we did that,” CCHS head coach Brandon Gurganus said. “It was also great to win a share of the division championship in the process. There were moments of frustration, but also glimpses of brilliance that really give me hope for the remainder of the season.”
CCHS got its tournament underway on Feb. 9 against Jasper High School jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first half. Jasper got a goal back early in the second half, but a late goal gave the Tigers breathing room to finish the game.
Later that day, CCHS got its second win of the tournament, a 1-0 win over Minor High School. Alex Morales’ early first-half goal was the difference in the game as CCHS controlled most of the possession, and Mateo Hinojosa earned the clean sheet.
CCHS closed out the Lakeshore Shootout with a convincing 8-0 win over Holy Family Cristo Rey Catholic High School on Feb. 10. Logan Lutz bagged his first goal for CCHS, and followed that up with two more in the game for the first hat trick of the season for the Tigers. Zakhori Jackson took over in goal for CCHS and earned a clean sheet.
Lutz was the leading goal scorer in the tournament with three, and Jorge Castillo, Gentry Elmore and Miguel Gomez had two goals each.
“I think sometimes we forget that the current version of CCHS soccer is only six years old, and these kids are still learning how to win,” Gurganus said. “The goal now is to use the next three matches to clean up the mistakes before area play begins.”
The CCHS soccer teams get back on the pitch starting on Feb. 13 against Montevallo High School with the varsity girls starting at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity boys. Only the varsity boys travel to LAMP High School on Feb. 15 for a matchup, with kickoff at 6 p.m.
The varsity girls get their crack at the Lakeshore Shootout from Feb. 16-17 taking on Crossville, Leeds and Huffman high schools.
