The Chilton County High School varsity soccer teams recently got their seasons underway on Feb. 1 and 2 picking up three wins. The Tigers traveled to Alabama Christian Academy for their first games, and the varsity boys took a 6-1 win to open their 2024 campaign. CCHS led Alabama Christian 2-1 at halftime and were able to pull away in the second half.
The varsity boys followed that up on Feb. 3 with a convincing 7-1 win over Demopolis High School in their home opener. After being tied at halftime 1-1, the squad and CCHS head coach Brandon Gurganus made a few adjustments at the break that produced six second-half goals.
“Both matches were similar in that we started out slow,” Gurganus said. “We were able to elevate our intensity level and make a few adjustments that led us to big second halves. Most of the adjustments had to do with being in the correct position on the field, and playing our game instead of allowing our opponents to dictate the style of play.”
Alex Morales bagged four goals in the first two games for CCHS, and Gentry Elmore and Jorge Castillo each had two goals. Mateo Hinojosa has been impressive early in goal for the Tigers, making two impressive saves against Demopolis to keep the CCHS sheet at one goal.
The CCHS varsity girls split their first two games of the 2024 season, falling to Alabama Christian 3-0 in their season opener. However, the Tigers turned the tables in their home opener against Demopolis winning 3-0 with goals from Amairany Leyva, Abril Mendez and Hannah Seebeck. Kendall Moore got her first clean sheet of the season in goal for CCHS.
The junior varsity boys won their first game of the season in dominant fashion over Demopolis 10-0. Avibau Mendez, Angel Gonzalez and Roger Hernandez played key roles in the win.
The varsity boys jump back on the pitch for the Lakeshore Shootout tournament in Alabaster and Calera from Feb. 8-10. CCHS faces Jasper High School in its tournament opener at 4 p.m. on Feb. 9, followed by a game with Minor High School the same night at 8:30 p.m. The Tigers conclude the tournament the following day against Holy Family Cristo Rey Catholic School at 3 p.m.
The varsity girls are off until hosting Montevallo High School on Feb. 13 with kickoff scheduled for 5 p.m., and the varsity boys will follow after.
