Chilton County High School put together a sound performance on both sides of the ball for the second consecutive week beating Tallassee High School 28-6 on the road on Sept. 29.

The Tigers’ defense has surrendered just nine points the last two weeks, and was led by the trio of Demarcus Riddick, D.J. Caffey and A.J. Underwood with 12 tackles each. Caffey added a sack to his totals.

“We preach at least three hats to the football, and (the defense) is playing with a lot of great energy and effort,” CCHS head coach Marvin Morton said. “They make plays when needed … Our motto is bend but do not break, and I was very pleased with the way the defense played last night.”

The first half saw just one scoring play as D.J. Jackson broke off a 55-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter and it was a one possession game at halftime.

In the second half, the CCHS offense began hitting its stride, and was led by the reliable connection between Logan Coppedge and Hunter Ousley. The tight end snagged a pair of touchdown grabs in the third quarter from 11 and 10 yards out. Ousley had three receptions for 46 yards and the two scores. Coppedge had another turnover-free game going 8-for-12 for 94 yards and the two touchdown tosses.

“That chemistry (between them) has been built from the spring through the summer, and just the reps they have with one another,” Morton said. “Hunter has proven he can be a versatile player in the passing game, and Logan has a lot of confidence in him as well. Those two have a strong bond, and you definitely see that on Friday nights.”

Justin Godwin set up Ousley’s second touchdown grab intercepting a pass and putting the CCHS offense inside the Tallassee 10-yard line. Godwin had nine tackles and four pass breakups.

CCHS outscored Tallassee 21-0 in the third quarter as Jackson sprinted for a 38-yard score in the frame as well. Jackson ran for 240 yards on 12 carries, a 20 yard per rush average.

Chilton County (3-3) hosts Benjamin Russell High School on Oct. 6 that begins a three-game streak of AHSAA Class 6A Region 3 opponents for the Tigers. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
