Some Chilton County area softball teams picked up momentum-building wins in their final few games before spring break between March 21-27. Verbena and Maplesville high schools won their last game before the break over in-county rivals.

 

Maplesville High School

The hottest team on the softball field in Chilton County are the Red Devils, and they continued their winning ways on March 21 with a 12-7 triumph over West Blocton High School. Maplesville scored in every inning and collected 11 hits as a team. Laci Cook led the way at the plate going a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Jaden McGee had two RBIs to her credit.

“Laci is really playing well,” Maplesville assistant coach Aaron Ratliff said. “We have been rounding into a good form here lately.”

Mollie Kayte Smith handled duties in the circle going seven innings and giving up seven runs (four earned) and striking out three hitters.

Maplesville’s second game of the week on March 23 was a 4-2 win over Thorsby High School.

 

Verbena High School

 Verbena’s only action of the week on March 21 against Isabella High School saw the Red Devils win 10-8 in extra innings. The win snapped a two-game skid, and they were led by Meagan Shiver who went 4-for-5 with a double. Jaycee Quinn and Lakeyn Mims both had two hits, one of Mims’ going for a triple.

Quinn was the starting pitcher for the Red Devil striking out five hitters.

 

Thorsby High School

The Rebels only game of the week was the wrong end of the 4-2 defeat to Maplesville on March 23. Makinley Turner launched a two-run home run in the first inning of the game for Thorsby’s only runs.

 

Isabella High School

The Mustangs only game of the week was the wrong end of the 10-8 loss to Verbena on March 21. The Mustangs trailed 8-2 entering the sixth inning and scored one run in the sixth and five runs in the seventh to send the game to extra innings. Isabella collected 11 hits as a team, and Morgan Short went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and a home run. Amelia Fjedstad was 2-for-5 with two RBIs, and pitcher Auburn Bassett sat down 11 hitters with a strikeout in eight innings pitched.

 

Chilton County High School

 The Tigers played their first AHSAA Class 6A Area 5 of the season on March 21 and fell 10-2 to Calera High School. CCHS jumped back into action on March 23 losing a close one to Oak Mountain High School 13-12. Trailing 13-4 entering the sixth inning, the Tigers posted six runs in the bottom half of the inning to get back into the game, cutting the lead to 13-10. CCHS scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but could not plate the third.

Mallie Harrison, Macey Pierce, Chloe Shiers and Emma Penley all had a home run, and the Tigers had 14 hits as a team. Shiers went 3-for-4, Pierce had four RBIs, and Harrison had three RBIs.

 

Jemison High School

 The Panthers lone action of the week was a 15-6 loss to Shelby County High School in an AHSAA Class 5A Area 7 matchup. Jemison had 10 hits, but four errors proved to be costly. Trinity Bean and Jaclyn Lowery were 3-for-3, and Kinsley Martin had a home run.
