The Chilton County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation of a Feb. 13 incident which took the life of Randell Finley, 48.

CCSO Assistant Chief Shane Mayfield said in an interview on March 7 that the situation is still under investigation and will be presented to a future grand jury to decide whether the incident was a justifiable homicide in self-defense or a criminal homicide. Law enforcement is also waiting on an autopsy report.

On Feb. 13, CCSO responded to a call around 11:25 p.m. on Highway 82 outside of the Maplesville town limits toward Autauga County. Mayfield said Finley’s girlfriend Ashley Hampton made the call to 911 stating that there had been a domestic dispute, and she had shot her boyfriend. Finley was thought to still be alive at the time of the call, but was later pronounced dead on the scene. Mayfield said Hampton has stated she was afraid Finley was going to kill her and that he had been drinking that night.

Hampton has been cooperating with investigators, he said.

Finley was a retired deputy sheriff from Jefferson County.
