The Chilton County Board of Education approved two new assistant principals during its meeting on Feb. 21.
Robert Peterson was approved as assistant principal for Chilton County High School, and Darren Denney was approved as assistant principal for Thorsby High School.
Peterson will replace Wes Dunsieth, whose resignation was also accepted during the meeting as being effective Feb. 11. Denney will fill the position left vacant when Holly Matson moved from the assistant principal position to principal after former principal Corey Clements became Chilton County Schools superintendent.
Houston Powell was also hired as the CCHS career prep teacher.
The resignations of CCHS SPED assistant Kacy Handley and THS nurse Lindsey Payton were also accepted. Emilee Thomas was hired during the meeting to replace Payton.
Other classified new hires included a school bus driver, two part-time teacher assistants, a full-time teacher assistant for Maplesville High School and a bookkeeper for Jemison High School.
Board member Keith Moore recused himself from the vote that passed motions on resignations, new hires, leave requests and substitutes.
There were 14 substitutes approved during the meeting. Two long-term substitute positions were also approved.
Also during the meeting, Clements notified the board that this is the final season that the THS softball team will be allowed to use the city field. Clements said the city has allowed use of the field for 25 years or so. Now, the little league team has grown, and the city wants to host travel ball tournaments, which will require all of the fields.
“We will immediately begin looking at other options to make sure our girls have somewhere to play,” Clements said. “… That’s not going to be a problem. I just wanted to alert the board.”
The board also approved:
- A track supplement for CCHS.
- Facility use agreements for pageants.
- Staff for the Summer Learning Camp.
- Volunteer coaches for CCHS.
