Liberty Hill Baptist Church is set to host the 15th annual Sportsmen’s Spectacular on March 11, including a wild game supper, door prizes, child-friendly outdoor games and competitions in the Kids Zone. Our guest speaker will be James “Jim” VanSteenhouse, also known as the Bear Man.
James H. VanSteenhouse, raised on a Michigan rotation crop farm and graduate of Michigan State University, made Houston, Texas home in 1994. Jim travels around the world to share the
story of his worst and best day on earth. The day he was viciously attacked and left for dead by an 800 plus pound Grizzly bear.
“Our annual Sportsmen’s Spectacular is one of our largest events at Liberty Hill,” said Kent Dodson, pastor of Liberty Hill Baptist Church. “It is such a great opportunity for us to meet people in our community and get to know each other through shared interests of hunting, fishing and the outdoors.”
Kids Zone activities and registration for door prizes will begin at 3 p.m. Supper begins at 5 p.m. Kids Zone competitions include archery, casting, BB gun target shooting and others. First and second place trophies will be awarded for three age groups, fifth grade and under.
Local outdoor enthusiasts will spend the afternoon cooking various wild game using Dutch ovens, grills and smokers. In the past, the supper has featured deer, buffalo, bear, squirrel, frog legs, elk and even alligator.
The dining area is decorated with mounted trophies taken by members of the Chilton County community. Bobcats, fish, deer, snakes and even antelope have been popular mounts in previous years.
Throughout the night, drawings will take place for various door prizes. After supper and the guest speaker, a drawing will take place for a $250 gift card grand prize; registrant must be present to win.
The Sportsmen’s Spectacular is a free event and will take place, rain or shine. If groups plan to attend, please RSVP by calling Liberty Hill at 205-755-1694 or email sherry@libertyhillonline.org.
