A Celebration of Life service for Curtis V. Smith, 89, resident of Isabella, will be held on Nov. 2, 2022 at 2 p.m. at Mulberry Baptist Church with Reverend Andy Mims and Reverend David Bishop officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Martin Funeral Home directing.
Mr. Smith was born in Stanton, Alabama on Dec. 18, 1932, the son of Messer and Zula Smith. He passed away on Oct. 29, 2022.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Hudson, M.G., Otis, Alfred and Vernon: Sister, Dorothy Lenoir; father, Messer L. Smith; mother, Zula Smith; Grandson, Taylor Smith.
Mr. Smith was an active member of Mulberry Baptist Church where he enjoyed serving as a deacon, choir director, trustee and in many other capacities. He was also a member of the Gideons.
He was a graduate of Maplesville High School and Auburn University. He served in the U.S. Air Force and the Air Force Reserves.
His career began at Isabella High School as an Ag teacher and later he became principal of the school. He served at the vocational school as a supervisor and then as the Director of the Career Technical School. He continued to serve in education as an elected member of the Chilton County Board of Education. His career in all these areas of education totaled 50 years.
Mr. Smith served 20 years in the State Legislature as a representative under five governors during his terms in office.
Among his many community and civic activities, he was heavily involved in United Way, Emergency Assistance Center, YMCA, PEECH, American Heart Fund, Chamber of Commerce, and Isabella Volunteer Fire Department.
Mr. Smith received many honors during his lifetime a few of which included being Citizen of the Year in Chilton County, a scholarship named in his honor by Alabama Cattleman Foundation and having the Isabella High School P.E. Facility building completed in 2019 named after him
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Marjorie (McAfee) Smith; Three Sons, Greg (Denise), Vince, Andy (Pam); Grandchildren, Mason, Christopher, Landon, Brooke, Emily, Zach, Jordan and Clint, 24 Great-Grandchildren with the 25th on the way.
Mr. Smith had big hands and a big heart and his ready smile and handshake will be missed by many.
