By Kallen Harris | Chilton Chamber Intern
My name is Kallen Harris, and I am a full-time student at Troy University.
Serving others has always been a goal for me. Early acceptance into the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree program at Troy is one way I hope to reach that goal. Caring for and helping future patients improve their health and achieve a better quality of life is my highest aspiration. Aside from nursing, serving in my community was always another goal. While pursuing that goal, doors of opportunity opened for me at the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce.
During my junior year of high school, a highlight was being selected as a member of the inaugural class of the Chamber’s Student Ambassador program. This program required me to attend receptions, banquets, teas, and ribbon cuttings with the exciting responsibility of representing my hometown. Attendees at these events often included elected officials, community members and business leaders. This experience prepared me for the professional world by encouraging interpersonal skills and the proper etiquette behavior. Another milestone was being chosen as the group representative for Chilton County at the Huntingdon College Economic Development Scholars Initiative.
It’s true when they say “home is where the heart is.” My heart is definitely at home serving others in Chilton County. Returning home each summer to work at my hometown Chamber has been such a blessing and learning opportunity for me. The world’s best teacher is experience, and I am so thankful for the opportunities afforded to me by working at my local chamber. Through the activities of an intern at the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce, I have learned the importance of networking, community service, and promoting growth and development within local businesses. One of my favorite events each summer is our very own Peach Jam! I experience first-hand just how much hard work goes into planning this very large tourism attraction. The Chamber prepares for this event all year long and it is always so rewarding to see everyone’s hard work come together. It is a great success made possible by a dedicated event planning team.
In this intern position, I have gained a new appreciation for the work of our Chamber. The Chamber staff truly has a big heart for small towns, and they have made my summer so enjoyable. If you are interested in serving your community, I highly encourage you to reach out to the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber is always seeking volunteers and would love for you to get involved. Well, it is back to nursing school for me! Take care of my hometown, which I love! Who knows, I may have the opportunity to work at Ascension St. Vincent’s Chilton and serve the Chamber in my future career.
