A request to rezone property to light industrial will be discussed by the Jemison City Council at its June 6 meeting.
The Jemison Planning Commission held a public hearing on the rezoning request made by Doug Bice for 16641 County Road 29 on May 24.
Bice is requesting that the property be changed from Single Family Residential to Light Industrial.
Jemison Planning official John Dennis said Ben E. Keith Trucking is wanting to lease the property from Bice in order to have overnight parking for 18-wheelers.
Community members asked whether County Road 29 could handle that kind of traffic. Dennis said the tractor trailers that will be using the property if it is rezoned would be smaller ones, like those used for food distribution companies.
Potential impact on property values was also a concern.
Dennis said the change would increase the value of the property because it was being developed.
Development plans include a gated, fenced gravel lot with an office and restroom facilities.
No maintenance or fueling would be done onsite.
The planning commission unanimously approved recommending the rezoning request to the city council.
The June 6 meeting of the Jemison City Council will be held at 6 p.m. at Jemison City Hall.
