Maplesville High School, Chilton County High School and Billingsley High School will all send athletes to the 2022 AHSAA Track & Field State Championship meets on May 6-7. Along with Isabella High School’s seven athletes who made it, a total of 11 Chilton County student athletes will compete for state titles.
Maplesville will send two runners to Cullman High School for the Class 1A-3A state meets. Junior Dalton Carter took home first place in the 110-meter hurdles with a 17.43 time at the Class 1A Section 2 meet at Paul W. Bryant High School in Tuscaloosa on April 29. Carter followed that up with a second-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles with a 46.11. This is Carter’s first year doing the hurdles.
“He decided that is what he wanted to do, and he has done really well with it,” Maplesville coach Justin Brock said.
The other state qualifier for the Red Devils is sophomore Will Harrison. Harrison posted a 2:23.48 in the 800-meter run finals to captured third place and advance to the state meet. He also captured a state berth in the 1600-meter run with a 5:33.79, good enough for fourth place at the sectional meet.
“They are a real good group of kids, and they work really hard,” Brock said. “We’re excited about the future.”
Both Maplesville runners set new personal records in all of their events at sectionals. Brock said the runners are looking forward to an opportunity to get better at the state meet.
“Looking forward to the competition, and where they stack up against some of the best to see where they need to be next year,” Brock said. “Hopefully they will have a good chance at winning before they get out of school.”
CCHS senior Leo Coradi punched his ticket to the state meet with a stellar showing in the 400-meter dash and the long jump. Coradi had his Class 6A Section 3 meet at Paul W. Bryant High School.
Coradi posted a 51.71 in the 400-meters to capture fifth place in the race. He followed that up with a 21-foot, 9-inch jump in the long jump to get fourth place. Coradi committed to Culver-Stockton College in Caton, Missouri to run track and play football.
Billingsley was also in Tuscaloosa on April 29 for the Class 1A Section 2 meet. The Bears will send junior thrower Andre Lee to the state meet after his 38-foot, 2-inch throw in the shot put. Lee place second with that effort.
The AHSAA Class 1A-3A State Championship meet will be May 6-7 at Cullman High School. The AHSAA Class 4A-7A State Championship meet will be May 5-7 at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
