Verbena students recently created festive centerpieces for Thanksgiving during the after-school program.
Dr. Jo Ann Summers said she had been leading art classes throughout the semester and wanted to have students work with a 3D medium for a Thanksgiving project.
“We had been working with different types of paint on paper, so clay was the perfect material to work with next in our discovery of art,” Summers, who is also the fourth-grade science and ELA teacher, said.
Students created coil pots with clay that hardened when left out.
“After the pots dried, students painted their pots,” Summers said. “Then, to add another artistic task, they created a floral design inside the pots for their own Thanksgiving Day tables using fall silk flowers. I think parents will be excited to see their child’s work. I know I simply loved watching them be creative.”
Creating the base of the pot was a bit of a challenge at first because students were working with a new medium.
However, students enjoyed completing the project.
“They talked about how much their moms were going to love their piece of pottery!” Summers said.
The project was finished just in time for the Thanksgiving break.
