Peggy Smith in the senior division and Aiden Turner in the junior division were this year’s first place winners in the Roy Wood Peach Festival Art Show.

Winners were announced on June 24.

Smith chose charcoal pencil as her art medium.

“It started out I was just sketching on a piece of paper, and I started drawing into the flower part, and it just evolved,” Smith said. “It just came out of my imagination.”

Charcoal appeals to her because “I love to draw, and I can get … really intense darks and real lights” when using it, Smith said.

Smith said she had also participated in the art show several years ago.

“I just always appreciated them having this here at the bank,” Smith said. “It gives you goals to work for. They have always been very supportive of artists here, and we all appreciate that.”

Since artists can enter two pieces in the show, Gloria Ronayne was awarded second and third place in the senior division. Tommy Crumpton was honorable mention.

Ronayne had painted a barn for the piece that placed second and various crustaceans for the other.

“I love barns and then of course, the colors of the crustaceans I have always admired, and I thought I would give it a try,” Ronayne said.

She drew inspiration for the barn from a barn and silo near Foley.

Watercolors are her favorite paint to use.

“I dabbled in oils and acrylic, but I really didn’t like it,” Ronayne said. “I started the watercolor, and I have stuck with it for about 15 years now.”

She said she likes watercolors “because they are so delicate and you have to layer, you have to start out very light and just layer … I just love the transparency of watercolors.”

When she participated in the show in 2019, she had received honorable mention.

Crumpton painted a river scene in acrylic for his entry.

“I have always been a fan of the river at night,” Crumpton said.

This served as his inspiration for painting a slough and nearby buildings at night with moonlight reflecting off the water.

In the junior division, Charlotte Blencowe also placed with both her entries taking second and third place. Luke Turner was honorable mention.

The Roy Wood Art Show is on display at River Bank& Trust, 620 Second Avenue N, in Clanton through June 30.
