The town of Thorsby was presented with the Silver Shovel Award by Spire during a Town Council meeting on June 22.
The award was presented to Thorsby because of the town’s continued commitment to safe digging practices.
Spire’s Alabama Right-of-Way Department Area manager Jeff Wilcox and Damage Prevention Specialist Phillip Barber were present to give the award to Thorsby Mayor Robert Hight.
Spire is a natural gas company that operates in Alabama, Mississippi and Missouri. With natural gas being as flammable as it is, following proper safety procedures is essential.
Thorsby did an exceptional job with that.
“Over the past calendar year … 45 jobs in 2020 were called in, and [Thorsby] had zero hits,” said Wilcox.
To be eligible for the award, a town has to be in Spire’s service territory. They must also follow the statutes of the state law and must not be at-fault for any damages from jobs.
