New Life Community Church is one step closer to having a permanent home.

The church celebrated a groundbreaking on May 2 at the former Chilton Medical Center site on Lay Dam Road.

Dirt work has already begun on the site and a pre-built metal building, which will have a brick façade, has been ordered.

Associate Pastor Scott Gothard said the day was a time to “celebrate what God is doing” and what He has done at New Life.

“It is because of your sacrifice,” Gothard said. “It is because of your generosity, your (service) every week that makes this possible.”

He emphasized that the new building was a means to “reach lost people and make God famous in our city,” not just an accolade for the church.

The property was purchased in 2017 with plans to be in a new building on it in 2021.

The church had been meeting next to Baugh Ford before moving to the family life center of Victory Chapel as plans took shape for construction.

“We knew going forward that we would need our own building,” Trustee Chair Jarrad Bates said.

A fund, the Legacy fund, was established to save money toward the move.

This fund purchased the land and will pay for the building.

“We’re debt free right now with about $400,000 in the bank,” Bates said.

July is the expected delivery for the building, and the church hopes to be holding services in the new building by Easter 2022.
