The family of the late Sammy Wilson received a resolution honoring his memory from Alabama Rep. Van Smith (District 42) during a recent Clanton City Council meeting.

Before reading the proclamation signed by Gov. Kay Ivey, Smith shared personal memories of Wilson, recounting how he first met him when Wilson was working for Bell Hardware.

“I tend to eat breakfast or lunch at Main Street (Café), and I never had to wonder if Sammy was in there because you would hear him, that happy voice,” Smith said.

Smith presented the resolution on behalf of himself, Rep. Russell Bledsoe (District 49) and Ed Oliver (District 81).

“It is with profound sorrow that we note the death of Clanton City Councilman of Sammy Don Wilson,” Smith read. “… He leaves a void in the lives of his family, friends and the entire community, where he was highly regarded.”

The resolution went on to highlight the work Wilson had done for the city of Clanton by supporting the renovation of the Head Start and Senior Connection, serving on the utility board and doing whatever he could to help his community.

“Although his presence will be greatly missed, the memories of him will be cherished in the hearts of all that knew and loved him,” Smith read. “… this resolution is offered in tribute to his life.”

Mayor Jeff Mims also presented the family with the photo of Wilson that had hung at Clanton City Hall.

“We miss him every day that’s for sure,” Mims said.

Wilson died on Jan. 28, 2021 from complications of COVID-19. He was 78.
